A Day in Reception

A typical day in reception includes children working as a whole class, where questions are posed to the children, giving them the opportunity to explore and express their ideas alongside their peers and teachers. In continuous provision, children are encouraged to embed and extend their focus learning through weekly challenges where they then get a reward to promote their independence. In addition to this, outdoor provision is accessible at least once a day for all children to choose. The classroom areas are enhanced and resourced regularly and consider the children’s interests where possible.

During the week English, Maths and Phonics whole class, small group or individual sessions are taught daily. Alongside this, we believe all children deserve a rich curriculum which involves weekly PE sessions in our gym, music sessions in the music room, computing sessions in the fully equipped computer suite with Mrs Holmes, library sessions in the beautiful school library and an afternoon outdoors in the woods to maximise learning in a different environment.

Reading in Reception

The children will undertake Little Wandle phonics sessions every day in Reception. They will take part in small group reading practise three times a week where they will focus on the same text and develop their fluency, prosody and comprehension skills. In addition to this, the same text will be sent home over the week to allow further development of the skills practised in school.
