Sport at Sandal

Our ethos of “Nurture  Grow Succeed” is deeply embedded within our Physical Education curriculum. At Sandal Primary School, we strive to provide a progressive curriculum that along with our mission statement demonstrates a curriculum that increasingly challenges, encourages and inspires all of our children whilst motivating them to “aim high” and reach their full potential.

We recognise the importance that Physical Education has to the child’s physical and cognitive growth as well as the role it can play in a child’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC). We are committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of our children and understand the impact physical activity and sport has on this.

We believe that the delivery of our sequenced PE curriculum prepares our children as they progress through the fundamental stages of primary education and equips them with the transferable life-long skills such as greater confidence, resilience and social skills that are needed to be “secondary ready”.

We offer a broad and inclusive range of experiences that utilises all the provision we have available, particularly promoting in recent times the outdoor space we have and linking with a plethora of cross-curricular opportunities.

Children are offered a range of opportunities to participate in competitive sport such as football, rugby, cricket, cross-country, dance and gymnastics, to name but a few.

In 2021-2022 Sandal were awarded a gold award by School Games in recognition of our commitment to the development of competition across school and into the community.

Active Ambassadors

Over 30 pupils have completed and passed their training to become Active Ambassadors and deliver and lead a range of physical activities at lunchtime for all year groups  as well as developing sport across school. They really impressed their instructors from a White Rose Rugby and are set to start their sessions next week.

Active Ambassadors

As part of our commitment to increasing the opportunities for children to experience more physical activities and participate in school sport, 30 children in Year 5 have volunteered to take part in a new award to develop leadership in sporting activities. The Active Ambassadors award is designed to benefit all participants key leadership skills such
as courage, reflective, organisation, kindness, enthusiasm, and teamwork. The award will be delivered by our P.E partners, White Rose Rugby and once training has completed children will lead a physical activity at lunchtime to our younger children on a rota basis. In addition, they will help support me in developing sport and physical activity at Sandal. This will start in the second half of the Summer term and continue as the children move into Year 6

Titus Salt School Tag Rugby Festival 2023

Sandal entered an impressive 5 teams from across Key Stage 2 to compete in the annual tag rugby festival at Baildon Rugby Club on Thursday 20 th April. The event, which was very well organised by the Year 13 sports students from Titus Salt School, involved mixed teams with some of our children competing for the first time. The sun shone and so did our players; they were a joy to watch with some very impressive trys and skillful tagging. A special mention to Ella and Annie who managed to complete their West Yorkshire Finals Race at Temple Newsam and make it to the tournament in time (and with enough energy!) to score over 14 trys between them!

West Yorkshire Cross Country Finals Race

The reorganised West Yorkshire Cross Country Finals Race also took place on Thursday 20th April, which meant
a number of children had a tough decision to make as to which event to compete in!

Although the race did not lead to the national final, it enabled all the children who had qualified for the postponed race in March, the opportunity to run and represent their district. Sandal are very proud of everyone who took part and well done to the Year 5 girls team who finished second overall.

Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us next season and allow us to compete in all of the organised races.
Please contact me if you have been unable to access the individual results page for your child.

Football

Integra Insurance Girls Cup

Sandal Girls Team competed in our first tournament together on 4th May at Bradford Park Avenue. The girls
played well and really came together as a team. There were some very promising performances with one game finishing 8-0 to Sandal. Sadly, we didn’t make it to the final but the girls have been training hard and are looking forward to playing in the Bradford Primary Schools League next halfterm.

Bradford Primary Schools U11 Boys League

Sandal entered two teams to complete in the U11 league which took place over two heats at Marley Stadium. The 14 boys from across Year 5 and 6 played well and showed passion, skill and commitment. Well done to everyone who took part and good luck to Sandal A team who have qualified for the finals on June 22nd . A letter will be sent
shortly with more details to those players who have qualified.

Brownlee Foundation Mini-Triathlon

Almost 40 children took part in the minitriathlon on Tuesday 16th May, organised by the Brownlee Foundation, at Bradford Grammar School. The event is a noncompetitive and inclusive event that gives children an opportunity to try the disciplines of a triathlon. The children loved it! A number of them have said it is something they are hoping to do again, so watch this space as we may have some future triathlon stars!

Next Half-Term

A number of events have been pencilled in for the second half of the Summer term, which involve tennis, cricket, tag-rugby, football and netball. Further details will follow as soon as they are available. I am speaking to children on a regular basis to ensure that the opportunities we are offering encompass a range of interests and demands and our lunchtime rota for free clubs changes each half-term to reflect this. I continue to encourage children to come to me with ideas to develop sport and physical activity at Sandal and wherever possible I will try and offer this at some point for them.
